You’re standing in the middle of the foyer. There are kids’ toys and books all over the floor. The only box you’ve had time to pack so far is in the process of getting shredded by your cat.

You might be asking yourself this: how on earth am I going to manage packing all of this stuff?

Packing and unpacking can be some of the most daunting tasks when it comes to moving with your family.

Here are a few tips and tricks to help you get started with your packing (you’ll get it done, don’t worry):

  • Start Early. There’s no way around it—packing up your home is a massive undertaking. Packing can take anywhere from a few days to several months. To ensure an efficient move, start packing early by putting infrequently used items or seasonal products (who needs fake pumpkins in June?) away first.
  • Label Your Boxes. There is nothing worse than moving to a new home and not being able to find anything. Find a system that works for you, whether it be colour-coding, keeping an inventory list, or using different boxes for different rooms, to ensure you will be able to find your items later on.
  • Keep Clothes in Their Dressers. To save time, don’t bother with emptying the clothes from your drawers. Simply tape them shut and load them onto the moving truck when the time comes.
  • Don’t Pack Important Documents. Things will get lost in the move—it’s inevitable. Sometimes it takes months to find them. Keep important documents like passports, birth certificates, and sales documents with you during the move.
  • Put Tools Aside. So you’ve disassembled most of your furniture but you can’t find any of your tools. Now what? Be sure to put your tools in a separate labeled box you can easily find. Otherwise you might be eating breakfast on the floor for a few weeks,
  • Make it Fun. Take the stress out of packing by adding some family fun to the process. Offer prizes for things like “most boxes packed in a day” or “most things packed into one box.” Your kids will get a kick out of it and help with the packing.
  • Unplug and Clean Appliances. In order to properly defrost, the fridge should be unplugged at least 24 hours before moving. All other appliances, like stoves, dishwashers, washers and dryers should be thoroughly cleaned prior to moving.

Moving with your family is a big deal. If you start early, and stay organized, you can alleviate a lot of stress involved with the moving process.
