5 Things Border Patrol Might Not Allow You to Bring into the US

Moving to the US from Canada may not seem like it’ll be all that different, but in the first few weeks of your cross-border move, you’ll feel like you’re in a whole other part of the world. When people move to the United States, they tend to bring everything with them that reminds them of home. However, there are some items that might be difficult or impossible to bring across the border, such as:

#1: Alcohol and Prescription Drugs

The US border patrol is very strict on how much alcohol you can bring into the country with you. Every state has its own alcohol regulations, so be sure to check local laws. However, not all alcohol is treated equally. The jury is still out on whether or not North American absinthe is real absinthe, but whatever brand you carry, it will not be permitted in the US. All prescription drugs must be clearly labelled in their original packages, but drugs that aren’t approved by the FDA are illegal to bring in. Rohypnol, colloquially known as the “date rape” drug is not allowed, for example. While it is prescribed as a treatment for insomnia in some countries, it has not been approved by the FDA.

#2: Pets

The last thing you want is to leave behind your fur baby at the border. Making sure your dog, cat, ferret, or parrot can cross the border with you is as easy as bringing their vet papers that shows that they are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations and other shots. However, if for whatever reason you’re carrying  a bag of your dog’s puppy fur from their first groom, it’ll likely be confiscated.

#3: Plants, Food, and Biological Materials

If you’re bringing prepared food for your trip in a cooler, that’s fine. But not all food materials will be permitted in the states. For instances, prepared eggs will be thrown out. Kinder Surprise Eggs are illegal in the United States, and so will not be permitted in the country. Packaged and sealed food items such as coffee, honey, canned goods, condiments, and baby formula are generally all admissable. Fresh fruits and vegetables will likely be confiscated. Generally speaking, meat is not allowed.

#4: Rare and Exotic Goods, Wildlife, or Endangered Species

Depending on the item you plan to bring in, it may be restricted or prohibited. The US has different laws regarding taxidermied animals, or animals parts like ivory, hides, and bones. Check with state and federal regulations before you go, as you may need to fill out paperwork.

#5: Hazardous Materials & Firearms

Fireworks, ammunition, soil, and the like are all dangerous to transport. While there may be other ways to ship these goods to your new home, we recommend making other arrangements.

The best way to prevent delays at the border is to be prepared with all the right documentation and to limit the amount of household items that you’re moving with you. If you’re moving to the United States, contact Focus Moving Services to or request a quote.
