While the US is on the same side of the world as Canada, Canadians will still experience some level of a culture shock. Each US citizen has the right to carry arms, the exchange rate is lower, and you’ll find many people of the United States are hardcore patriots. But before you settle in and get to know the people and neighbourhood, you have to get there first.

When moving to the US from Canada, you need to find a new home, ensure your work is lined up, and choose a first-rate moving company. In addition to packing and getting your possessions to your new place, the Focus Moving team is here to provide you with what you should know about moving from Canada to the US.Woman-with-child packingYou Can’t Store Everything

Moving companies have some restrictions on what items they will move for you or put into storage. Before moving, you need to have made the proper arrangements for certain items, such as:

  • Food and plants
  • Taxidermy
  • Live animals and pets

Storage facilities usually have climate-controlled and secure units, but they won’t let you store just anything. Organic and biological items, such as food and animals, cannot be stored because they have an odour, which will attract insects and lead to mould.

It’s also hazardous for the health of live animals because there are no windows. Some people mistake storage units for shelters and garages.

Going Across the Border

Moving to the USA from Canada requires a lot of paperwork that the border guards will likely want to check, such as:

  • A passport for each family member
  • An approved visa that corresponds to the reason for your move (e.g. work, studying abroad, etc.)
  • I-94 form (Arrival-Departure Card)
  • HS-7 form (for any motor vehicle imports)

Make sure the border guards give you a copy of your I-94 form. It’s your Arrival-Departure Record Card. The HS-7 form is required for any motor vehicles you are importing.

And don’t forget: :The same restrictions for packing and storage applies when crossing the border.

As for cross-border moves with pets over three months old, ensure they’re up to date on all of their shots before moving. It’s essential to keep all of their documentation close at hand when you have to speak with the border guards. Person signing documentWARNING: Cannabis may be legal in Canada and in some parts of the US, but Canadians cannot cross the border with it. You may be denied entry if it’s found on you and if you admit to consuming it.
